Leptonectes was named by McGowan (1996).
It was assigned to Eurhinosauria by Motani (1999); to Neoichthyosauria by Sander (2000), Fischer et al. (2013); and to Leptonectidae by Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003), Maisch and Reisdorf (2006), Maisch (2010), Ji et al. (2016).
