Balaena lamanoni was named by Cuvier (1836) [The type locality of Balaena lamanoni is not clear. Also, Cuvier does not use the binomen Balaena lamanoni, but it is attributed to him by later authors. Some other attribute it to Desomoulins.].
It was synonymized subjectively with Balaena biscayensis by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Balaena glacialis lamanoni by Trouessart (1904).
