Whitfieldoceras lenticontractum was named by Flower (1952). Its type specimen is a specimen in the NYSM, a shell, and it is a cast. Its type locality is Little Chazy River, which is in a Shermanian carbonate limestone in the Sherman Falls limestone Formation of New York.
