Taxonomy
Barberenia allenensis was named by Rougier et al. (2009). Its type specimen is MML-Pv 13, a tooth (right upper molariform), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerro Tortuga, Bajo Trapalcó, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian fluvial sandstone/siltstone in the Allen Formation of Argentina.
It was recombined as Groebertherium allenensis by Connelly et al. (2024).

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
G. W. Rougier et al. 2009 | Medium sized dryolestoid with a skewed compressed basin similar to Quirogatherium and Barberenia araujoae (Bonaparte, 1990). Differs from Quirogatherium in the more gracile cusp pattern, smaller size and more skewed cusp arrangement. Barberenia allenensis is similar to B. araujoae in the sharp, tall cusps, but the Allen Formation species is distinctly larger, has a less mesiodistally elongated triangular outline with a smaller parastylar area and a less developed anterior cingulum.
The parastylar hook is relatively small, significantly smaller than the similar Barberenia araujoae (Bonaparte, 1990). | |
B. E. Connelly et al. 2024 | Small-sized dryolestoid, slightly smaller than G. stipanicici yet with more robust and bulging cusps. It has a skewed compressed basin, similar to Quirogatherium major and G. stipanicici. Differs from Quirogatherium 448 in the more gracile cusp pattern, smaller size, and more skewed cusp arrangement. The holotype of G. allenensis is similar to G. stipanicici (MACN-RN 1034) in having tall, sharp cusps, but the Allen Formation premolar has a less mesio-distally elongated triangular outline with smaller parastylar area and parastylar hook, and less developed anterior cingulum. All specimens here referred to G. allenensis differ from G. stipanicici in having a less pronounced ectoflexus. They also exhibit a reduced metastylar area, which does not protrude as in G. stipanicici but is nearly aligned with the postparacrista. |
