Taxonomy
Pitekunsaurus macayai was named by Filippi and Garrido (2008). Its type specimen is MAU-Pv-AG-446, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cañadón de Aguada Grande, which is in a Campanian/Campanian wet floodplain mudstone in the Anacleto Formation of Argentina.

Garrido 2008This genus is characterized by the following autapomorphies: (1) basipterygoid processes broadly separated and parallely projected, (2) presence of small depressions or longitudinal grooves in the spinal sector of spinopostzygapophyseal lamina in anterior cervical vertebrae, (3) centropostzygapophyseal lamina forked proximally in anterior dorsal vertebrae, and (4) potserior centrodiapophyseal lamina with accessory lamina in anterior dorsal vertebrae.
