Taxonomy
Triisodontidae was named by Scott (1892). Its type is Triisodon. It was considered paraphyletic by Zhou et al. (1995).

It was reranked as the subfamily Triisodontinae by Matthew (1937) and Zhou et al. (1995).

It was assigned to Creodonta by Hay (1902); to Mesonychoidae by Hay (1930); to Mesonychidae by Matthew (1937); to Mesonychia by Zhou et al. (1995); and to Acreodi by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Tabuce et al. (2011).
