Sinonyx was named by Zhou et al. (1995). Its type is Sinonyx jiashanensis.
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Zhou et al. (1995); and to Mesonychidae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Gingerich (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001).
