Pediomeryx ruminalis was named by Stirton (1939). Its type locality is UCMP V-3405, Norris Canyon, which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in California.
It was recombined as Yumaceras ruminalis by Prothero and Liter (2007), Prothero and Liter (2008).
