Sulestes was named by Nessov (1985).

It was assigned to Sulestinae by Nessov (1985), Nessov et al. (1994); to Deltatheridiidae by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Archibald and Averianov (2005), Averianov et al. (2010); and to Deltatheroida by Williamson et al. (2012), Bi et al. (2015).
