Rhyacotriton was named by Dunn (1920). It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhyacotritonidae.
It was assigned to Rhyacotritoninae by Estes (1981); to Ambystomatoidea by Naylor and Krause (1981); to Rhyacotritonidae by Gao and Shubin (2001); and to Urodela by Skutschas and Gubin (2012).
