Taxonomy
Planorbis trilobatus was named by Conrad (1839). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Bucania trilobatus by Hall (1852), Rogers (1858), Foerste (1887) and Grabau (1901); it was recombined as Bellerophon trilobatus by Lesley (1889); it was recombined as Bellerophon (Bucania) trilobatus by Foerste (1893); it was recombined as Bellerophon (Bucaniella) trilobatus by Reed (1904); it was recombined as Bucaniella trilobata by Knod (1908) and Reed (1921); it was recombined as Bellerophon (Plectonotus) trilobatus by Williams and Breger (1916); it was recombined as Bucanella trilobita by Bolton (1957); it was recombined as Tritonophon trilobata by Peel (1974); it was recombined as Plectonotus trilobatus by Laubacher et al. (1982); it was recombined as Plectonotoides trilobatus by Wagner (2023).
