Punctospirifer inflatus was named by Chronic (1949). Its type specimen is AMNH 26960/1:2, a shell (Articulated shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AMNH297, Bed 15, Cerro Ampáy section 7, Abancáy, which is in an Asselian/Sakmarian marine limestone/shale in Peru.
