Clitendoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Aren-u]. Its type is Clitendoceras saylesi.
It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Hook and Flower (1977), Kröger and Landing (2008), Evans (2011).
