Whitfieldoceras was named by Foerste (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u O Ashg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524].

It was assigned to Clinoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
