Temperoceras was named by Barskov (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-l D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Orthoceras ludense.

It was assigned to Geisonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Kröger (2008).
