Protobactrites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Orthoceras styloideum. It is the type genus of Protobactritidae.
It was assigned to Protobactritidae by Chen et al. (1981); to Orthoceratidae by Crick (1981); and to Orthocerida by Teichert et al. (1964), Sepkoski (2002).
