Taxonomy
Typhis sawkinsi was named by Mansfield (1925) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; Trinidad and Tobago.]. Its type specimen is USNM 352673, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS 9219 - Brasso Clay, which is in a Miocene marine claystone in the Brasso Clay Formation of Trinidad and Tobago.
It was recombined as Laevityphis (Laevityphis) sawkinsi by Keen (1944); it was recombined as Siphonochelus (Laevityphis) sawkinsi by Gertman (1969) and Perrilliat (1992).
