Coluber getulus was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lampropeltis getulus by Fitzinger (1843), Holman (1959), Rage (1984), Parmley and Holman (1995); it was recombined as Lampropeltis getula by Parmley and Hunter (2010).
