Neolepetopsidae was named by McLean (1990). It is extant. Its type is Neolepetopsis. It is the type family of Neolepetopsoidea.

It was assigned to Neolepetopsoidea by Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Lottioidea by Bouchet et al. (2017).
