Stegocephali was named by Cope (1868). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Laurin et al. (2000).

It was reranked as the subclass Stegocephalia by Kuhn (1946); it was reranked as the unranked clade Stegocephali by Gadow (1898), Laurin et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Phractamphibia by Gadow (1898); to Batrachia by Cope (1875), Hay (1902); to Amphibia by Moodie (1909), Swinton (1934), Kuhn (1946); to Batrachomorphoidea by Huene (1954); and to Choanata by Laurin et al. (2000).
