Taucanamo primum was named by van der Made (1997). Its type specimen is MNHN Ar5, a mandible (sin. with p1-m3), and it is not a trace fossil.

The length and width of the M3 expressed as percentages of the same values in the M1 have lower values than in T. sansaniense.
