Herpetocetinae was named by Steeman (2007) [This subfamily is not listed in Table 1, p. 880 (Steeman, 2007).]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cetotheriidae by Steeman (2007), Whitmore and Kaltenbach (2008), Whitmore and Barnes (2008), Steeman (2010), Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012), Boessenecker (2013), Bisconti (2014), El Adli et al.
