Melanea constricta was named by Sowerby (1821). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Turritella constricta by Fleming (1828); it was recombined as Phasianella constricta by Goldfuss (1832); it was recombined as Chemnitzia constricta by de Koninck (1844); it was recombined as Loxonema constricta by de Koninck (1881); it was recombined as Microptychis constricta by Longstaff (1933), Batten (1966).
