Taxonomy
Physeter (Euphysetes) simus was named by Owen (1866). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1474c-73.6.25.2, a skeleton. Its type locality is Waltair, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in India.
It was recombined as Callignathus simus by Gill (1871) and Gill (1871); it was recombined as Kogia simus by Schulte (1937), Yamata (1954), Barnes (1977), Nagorsen (1985), Vidal (1991), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); it was synonymized subjectively with Kogia breviceps by Hershkovitz (1966); it was recombined as Kogia sima by Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Bloodworth and Odell (2008), Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015).
