Leptocleidus capensis
Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus capensis was named by Andrews (1911). Its type specimen is SAM-PK 5822, a partial skeleton (Skull and various postcrania), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Picnic Bush, Swartkops River, which is in a Valanginian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Sundays River Formation of South Africa.
It was recombined as Peyerus capensis by Andrews (1911), Stromer (1935), Welles (1962); it was recombined as Leptocleidus capensis by Andrews (1922), Persson (1963), Cruickshank (1997), O'Keefe (2001).
