Type specimens:
- Metaxytherium krahuletzi: G II 21, 22, 25, 26, 29, 34, a set of teeth. Its type locality is Eggenburg, which is in a Burdigalian marine horizon in the Burgeschleinitz Formation of Austria.
- Halianassa studeri: Mus. Naturgesch. Bern, unnumbered, a maxilla. Its type locality is Magenwil, which is in a Burdigalian marine sandstone in Switzerland.
- Metaxytherium argoviense: NHMBe unnumbered, a partial skull (skull cap).
- Metaxytherium christoli:
