Type specimen: CMM-V-2287, a partial skeleton (most of a broken/disarticulated skull (see details of preserved parts below), the symphyseal part of the mandible, and several detached teeth. An atlas, another). Its type locality is Plum Point, north, Zone 10, which is in a Langhian estuary/bay claystone in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.
