Sister taxa: Catonyx cuvieri, Catonyx tarijensis

Type specimen: NHMUK 2819, a skull. Its type locality is Pampa del Tamarugal (near Pica), which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Chile.

Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore
