When: Red Bluff Formation, Rupelian (33.9 - 28.1 Ma)
• Red Bluff formation is exposed in Clark and Wayne counties, Mississippi. It consists of fossiliferous, dark grey, silty clay with zones of ironstone concentrations in lower part. These sediments conformably overlie the blue-grey, blocky, marine clay of the Shubuta Clay Member of the Yazoo Formation and were deposited in shallow marine shelf, prodelta, and marginal delta bay enviroments. Lower part of the Red Bluff Formation is the most fossiliferous. Otoliths are also abundant here.
• formation-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: offshore; poorly lithified, gray, silty claystone and ironstone
Size class: mesofossils
Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite
Collection methods: bulk, mechanical,
• bivalves only
