Also known as ME 21
Where: Okinawa, Japan (26.6° N, 128.1° E)
• coordinate estimated from map
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Nakoshi Sandstone Member, Early/Lower Pliocene (5.3 - 3.6 Ma)
• The Ryukyu Group is divisible into diconformable Pliocene and Plesitocene units. The lower sandy and silty part of the Ryukyu Group is divided into two geographic elemens, the Nakoshi Sand and the Chinen Sand. The Nakoshi Sand is assumed to be equivalent with the Chinen Sand. The Nakoshi sand is green to gray and locally it contains some soft, fine, light green silt, probably derived from nearby greenstones. The fossiliferous sand is underlain by an undetermined thickness of gravel. Presumably it is the basal conglomerate of the formation.
• bed-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: coastal; gray, green sandstone
Size class: macrofossils
Preservation: original aragonite
Collection methods: quarrying,
• Collections held in USNM and UGSG repositories.
