Edriocrinus-Brachiocrinus Assoc., Lower Helderberg Group (Devonian of the United States)

Where: New York (42.7° N, 74.3° W)

• Paleocoordinates: 26.7° S, 56.3° W (Wright 2013)

• coordinate based on political unit

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Helderberg Group, Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• "Lower Devonian (Gedinnian); lower Helderberg Group, Kalkberg and New Scotland Formations"

Environment/lithology: marine; burrowed, argillaceous, cherty/siliceous lime mudstone and micaceous, argillaceous, cherty/siliceous packstone

• "In general, depositional rates appear to have been low. Much of the muddy carbonate is burrow-mottled, and most fossils are disarticulated to slightly fragmented....Presence of distal sotrm beds, as well as the rare occurrence of receptaculitid(?) algae in the New Scotland suggest only moderate deptsh within the photic zone. [Brachiopods are BA 4-5.]"
• "The units are nodular to tabular argillaceous lime mudstones, wackestones and packstones with some distinct beds of black chert nodules, indicating generally low energy muddy sea floor conditions. Distinctive banded lithologies, particularly in the Kalkberg area, appear to reflect alternating beds of storm-winnowed skeletal wackestone/packstone and finer grained, slightly dolomitic 'background' mudstones; some thin shale beds record distal mud tempestites. The source of silica comprising black cherts is uncertain, but it probably reflects biogenic opaline silica in part: siliceous sponge spicules are frequently found within chert nodules int he Kalkberg."
