Sample E 2.0, Tercis-les-Bains (Cretaceous of France)

Where: Landes, France (43.7° N, 1.1° W)

• Paleocoordinates: 32.1° N, 8.1° E (Wright 2013)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Pachydiscus neubergicus ammonoid zone, Early/Lower Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• Precise correlation of level E 0 with the main outcrop has been made possible thanks to lithological features. The most significant lithological feature is the presence of a pycnodont-rich bed which is found at level 117.3 (section PIV) and at level 3.2 on section E. This feature is followed by a slightly more clayey horizon 0.5 metre above in both cases. Another feature is the change from pale flint to dark flint in the succession. It is observed at level 131.4 on PIV and at level 19.6 in the E section. The approximately similar interval between these two independent features in sections PIV and E (about 14.1 and 16.4 metres, respectively) make them a reliable criterion for correlation. We have keyed the correlation on the pycnodont bed suggesting that wall E 0 corresponds to level 114.1 in the section on platform IV.
